## What we repair, and what usually goes wrong with it

## A downdraft is a blower, a damper and a duct. Most of it is not the appliance.

JennAir built the first self-ventilating cooktop in 1961 and the first downdraft range in 1965 — ventilation pulled **down through the cooking surface** instead of up into a hood — and there are still downdraft cooktops, a downdraft range and downdraft ventilation units in the current line. Far more of them are in South Florida kitchens from the decades in between.

When one stops pulling, the order of investigation is **filter, damper, duct, blower, and only then the control**. Three of those five are outside the machine, and two of them cost nothing to check. It is worth knowing that before anybody quotes you for a cooktop.

## On most of these, the door you are looking at belongs to your cabinetmaker.

Thirty-six of the sixty-five refrigeration models in this line are **panel-ready**, and so are most of the dishwashers and wine cellars. The front is your own millwork, hung on the appliance’s hinges and carrying its own weight.

That changes two practical things and only two. The panel comes off before some repairs and goes back on aligned afterwards, which is time we would rather plan than find in your kitchen. And **a door that has started to sit crooked may be the panel hardware rather than the appliance** — a much smaller job than the one people brace for. Mention it when you book.

## Three things South Florida is hard on

None of them are unusual here, and all three are cheaper to prevent than to repair.

Salt and humidity

- Frost that outruns a defrost cycle in August and never did in February

Heat in a sealed island

- Induction power boards cutting out because the cabinet has nowhere to breathe

- A condenser nobody has cleaned since the kitchen was built

Water, and what it carries

- Scale on a dishwasher heater and through an ice machine's water path
- Film on glassware that reads as a wash failure and is hardness
- Filters and cartridges that were changed on schedule until they were not

## Questions we get about the equipment

Where is the model number on a JennAir? — It depends on the machine. On a dishwasher it is on the edge of the door, visible only when the door is open. On a range or a wall oven it is on the frame inside the door, sometimes behind a storage drawer. On a refrigerator or a column it is on the upper left wall inside the fresh-food side. On a cooktop it is underneath, which usually means holding a phone camera up into the cabinet. On an undercounter unit it is often behind the toe-kick grille. It is worth a photograph rather than a transcription — the letters and digits run together and a single character changes which part fits.

What is the difference between RISE and NOIR, and does it affect the repair? — They are this maker's two design expressions, and they run across the whole catalog rather than being two model ranges. RISE is mixed metals with knurled handles and brass-toned collars; NOIR is stainless with black glass and a texture you find by touch rather than by looking. Underneath they are the same machine: the same burners, the same boards, the same failures, and usually the same part numbers with a different finish code on the end. So it changes nothing about the diagnosis and occasionally something about a cosmetic part, which is why we ask for the full model number rather than the family.

Is a JennAir the same machine as a KitchenAid or a Whirlpool underneath? — They belong to the same corporate group and share control platforms, and the maker's own support sites show it: the same error code sits at the same address under more than one badge. That is useful rather than damning — it means a code names the subsystem while the model number names the machine. What it does mean is that a code alone never identifies your appliance, which is why every code page on this site names the appliance rather than publishing a bare table. It also means the class of machine is not shared: a panel-ready column and a freestanding refrigerator are not the same appliance whatever the code says.

I have an older cartridge cooktop or a downdraft from the nineties. Is it still worth repairing? — Usually, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. The cartridge system — a grill or griddle module that lifts out and a two-burner cartridge that drops in — was built for decades and there are a great many of them still working in South Florida. The electrical and mechanical parts are commonly available; what is genuinely scarce is cosmetic and model-specific, and some cartridges and control panels are in that group. We tell you which side of that line your repair sits on before anything is ordered, and we say plainly when a machine is not worth the part.

How long is the manufacturer's warranty, and does it change what I should do? — The current major-appliance warranty runs <strong>two years from delivery, parts and labor</strong> — longer than the one year that is usual — and refrigeration carries a ten-year sealed-system warranty in three steps: two years parts and labor, then years three to five on the cavity liner and sealed system with labor included, then years six to ten on the sealed system with parts only. ## How JennAir appliances are repaired, and what decides the figure

### What we are called out for, appliance by appliance

- **Ranges.** Ignition and the sensing behind it, the simmer stage of a dual-stacked burner, the oven sensor, elements, and a latch that will not release after a self-clean
- **Cooktops and rangetops.** Induction boards and the cabinet air they need, radiant elements and their switches, spark modules and caps on gas, and the downdraft path
- **Wall ovens.** Sensors, elements, the convection fan, the latch and the control — with the appliance out of its housing before anybody reaches any of it

### Built-in is most of what decides the appointment

Almost nothing in this line stands on the floor. Ranges and rangetops are heavy and trimmed to cabinetry; wall ovens come forward out of a housing; refrigeration is columns and built-in cabinets behind panels that belong to your kitchen rather than to the appliance; dishwashers, cellars and ice machines live under counters and breathe through a grille at the bottom. The repair itself is often quick. **The access around it is the appointment**, and that is the honest reason a figure on this make sits where it does.

### One code table, several badges

JennAir belongs to a corporate group that runs the same control platforms across several of its names, and the maker’s own support pages show it: the same code sits at the same address under more than one brand. So a code is rarely what tells you whose machine it is. What does is the appliance, the configuration and the model number — which is why every code page on this site names the appliance rather than publishing a bare table.

### What an owner can genuinely do first

More than people expect, and the pages here say which. Lifting and reseating a burner cap. Pulling and rinsing a dishwasher filter. Washing a downdraft or hood filter. Clearing a defrost drain. Checking that the toe-kick grille under a cellar or an ice machine is not blocked. Cutting the power at the breaker for a minute after an outage.
