### Three machines, and why the card says so

The current line has three standalone freezers: panel-ready single-temperature columns at 18, 24 and 30 inches wide, designed to be installed beside a refrigerator column and finished with the same cabinet fronts. There is no chest freezer, no garage unit and no freestanding upright in this make’s catalog. Everything else people mean by “freezer” here is the frozen half of a combination cabinet, and that is the refrigerator page.

### What goes wrong on a column

- **The defrost circuit** — heater, sensor, control — which is far and away the first thing to look at when frost is winning.
- **The defrost drain**, which ices closed and then puts the meltwater on the floor of the cabinet instead of down the tube.
- **The evaporator fan**, which is what actually moves the cold around inside.
- **Door seals and alignment**, which on a paneled door means the panel and its hardware as much as the gasket.
- **The sealed system**, last and least often, and covered by the maker’s own ten-year refrigeration warranty in the terms set out on the refrigerator page.

### Humidity, and what it does to a freezer here

Every time a freezer door opens in August it takes in air carrying a great deal of water, and that water has to end up somewhere. On a healthy cabinet the defrost cycle clears it. On a cabinet whose door is sitting a fraction proud, or whose drain is partly closed, it accumulates faster than the cycle can keep up with — which is why a machine that was fine all winter starts frosting in summer without anything having broken. That is worth a visit before it becomes ice around the evaporator.

### What to have ready when you call

The model number, whether the cabinet beside it is behaving, and what a thermometer sitting in the middle of the freezer reads rather than what the panel says.

### I have a freezer drawer, not a column. Is that this page?

Not quite. If your freezer is the bottom drawer of a French-door cabinet or the lower half of a side-by-side, it is one appliance with the refrigerator above it and the refrigerator page is the right one — the sealed system, the defrost circuit and the board are shared. This page is about the standalone column: its own cabinet, its own door, its own system.

### How much frost is normal?

Very little, on a frost-free column. A light haze on packaging is nothing. A sheet on the back wall, ice on the floor of the cabinet, or frost that comes straight back after you clear it means the defrost circuit is not doing its job — a heater, a sensor, or a drain that has iced closed. It is a real repair, it is not usually an expensive one, and it gets worse rather than settling.

### The column beside it is fine. Does that tell you anything?

A great deal, and it saves time. Two columns are two complete appliances that happen to share a wall, so a warm one beside a cold one rules out the house supply, the ambient temperature and anything about the installation, and points straight at the one cabinet. It also means the food can move next door while the repair happens, which is not true of a single combination cabinet.

### What temperature should it be holding?

Zero Fahrenheit is the working number for a home freezer, and a few degrees either way is not an emergency. What matters more than the number is whether it is steady. A column that swings between well below zero and above ten across a day is telling you about its defrost cycle or its sensing even while the average looks correct.
