# Running It Empty With Vinegar Will Not Fix the Smell. Here Is What Does

## When a Jenn Air dishwasher smells bad there are two places, and it cannot clean either

Here is why every remedy fails.

The smell in a dishwasher lives in the **filter** in the floor of the tub, and in the **door seal** — especially along the bottom edge and into the two lower corners.

A Miami kitchen grows both faster. A machine that sits closed and warm between uses in an air-conditioned house is a good place for what causes the smell, and a second home that is empty for a month is the best place of all.

Neither of those is reached by the spray arms. So no cycle you run touches them. Not a hot cycle, not a cycle with vinegar in a cup, not a cleaning tablet, not two of those together. Every one of those washes the parts of the machine that were already clean, which is exactly why the routine feels thorough and the smell comes back by Thursday.

Twenty minutes with hot water and a brush is the actual repair.

## In This Order

**The filter first.** It is in the floor of the tub, under the lower rack. A quarter turn on the cylinder and it comes up in your hand; the flat screen underneath lifts out separately. Both parts, hot water, a brush, a drop of detergent. Not a rinse — a wash. It should come out looking like new.

Look at what comes off it. That is what you have been smelling.

**Then the seal.** All the way round, including the bottom edge where the door meets the tub, and into the corners. A cloth and hot water. This is the half nobody does, and on a machine that has been in daily use for years it holds as much as the filter.

**Then the cleaner.** Now that the two places are genuinely clean, an empty hot cycle with a proper dishwasher cleaner finishes the job — which is the role it was always meant to play, rather than being the entire attempt.

## The Quiet-Machine Trade

Every dishwasher in this line uses a **removable filter** rather than a food grinder. That is a large part of why they run at 38 to 39 decibels — a grinder is a motor with blades in it and you can hear one from the next room.

The trade is that somebody has to rinse the filter, and nobody is told this at delivery. A filter untouched for three years is behind a genuinely large share of both the smell calls and the "it is not cleaning" calls on this make, and they are the same problem.

Every month or two. Under a minute.

## When It Is Not Housekeeping

Two versions worth a call rather than a brush:

**It smells of drains, not of food.** Sulphurous or sewer-like rather than stale. That points at the drain path: a hose run without its high loop under the counter, a slow drain leaving water standing in the sump between cycles, or a connection at a disposal or trap that lets the sink come back toward the machine.

**It returns within a week of a proper clean.** If the filter came out looking new and the seal was wiped and it is back in five days, something is holding water where it should not be. That is a real repair and a small one.

## The Empty House

More of these machines than you would guess are in homes that stand empty for months. A closed dishwasher in a warm Florida house with a little water in the sump is a small, dark, damp box, and it does exactly what one would expect.

Leave the door ajar when you close the place up. It is free, it works, and it belongs on the same list as turning the water off.

## What to Have Ready When You Call

The model number from the edge of the door — visible only with the door open. Whether the smell is food or drains. Whether you have washed the filter, and what came off it. And whether the front is your own cabinet panel, because that decides how long the appointment runs.

We repair this equipment across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.
