There are still downdraft cooktops, a downdraft range and downdraft ventilation units in the current line, and there is a very large installed base in South Florida from the decades in between. ### Why most of the repair is not the appliance A downdraft has to move air sideways and down and then along a duct that runs under a floor or through the back of a cabinet. Five things can stop it and only two of them are inside the machine: **the filter, the damper, the duct, the blower, the control** — in that order of likelihood. Two of those five cost nothing to check and a real share of these calls end there. That is why this row starts low and reaches high: where the blower actually lives is not visible from the kitchen. ### Retractable downdrafts The units that rise out of the counter add a mechanism to all of the above: a motor, a drive and position switches, inside the countertop. It is the top of this band because reaching it is the work. It is also mechanical rather than electronic, which means it usually gives some warning — slower, noisier, or stopping short — before it stops altogether. That is a good moment to call. ### Legacy cartridge cooktops Many of the downdrafts in Miami kitchens are on the cartridge cooktops of the 1980s and 1990s, where a grill or griddle module lifts out and a two-burner cartridge drops in. They are usually still repairable. Electrical and mechanical parts are commonly available; some cartridges, trim and control panels are not, and availability is confirmed before an order rather than after. We say plainly when a machine is not worth the part. ### What it costs From $165 — a filter and a damper. A blower at the far end of a duct run, or a lift mechanism inside the counter, is the top. Then the blower is turning and the air is not going anywhere, and most of the causes are outside the appliance. In order: the grease filter, the damper that has to open when the blower starts, and the duct run itself. We check the path before we quote the appliance. ### The downdraft will not rise. On a retractable unit that is the lift — a motor, a drive and the switches that tell it where it is — and it is mechanical before it is electronic. It is also the top of this band, because the mechanism lives inside the counter and getting to it is the job. ### How often should the filter be washed? More often than the manual says if you cook properly. Monthly is not excessive for a kitchen in daily use. It comes out by hand, goes through a dishwasher or a sink of hot water, and dries before it goes back — and it is the single most effective thing an owner can do for a downdraft. ### Where is my blower? That is a real question and often not obvious. It may be in the downdraft unit, in the cabinet below, or remote — at the end of the duct run, sometimes in a crawl space or on an exterior wall.
