### The commonest induction problem in this city is a cabinet

Induction makes its heat in the pan, but the electronics that do it make heat of their own, under the glass, in a cabinet. The installation instructions ask for a specific opening and a specific clearance. A beautiful sealed island built afterwards does not know that, and the appliance reports it as an intermittent zone rather than as an installation problem. It is the first thing measured on this visit because it is free and because it is right often enough to matter.

### The other free answer

Cookware. A magnet has to hold firmly on the base and the base has to sit flat. A warped pan, a thin disc bottom or an aluminum pan produces a zone that will not start, cuts out, or reports an error — and none of that is the appliance. Two minutes with a magnet settles it.

Every induction position has a power board under it that makes heat of its own, cooled by a fan pulling air through the cabinet. A sealed island with nowhere for that air to come from produces exactly these symptoms with nothing broken. It is the first measurement and it is free.

Pan, then position

The same zone with a different pan, and a different zone with the same pan. Two minutes of that separates a cookware problem from a coil problem from a board problem.

Watch it fail

Intermittent zones are diagnosed running, under the load that produces the problem, which is why we ask you not to switch the appliance off and leave it before the visit.

Then the electronics

The coil, the sensor and the power board for that position, measured in turn. A generator board is the top of the band and the least likely of the three.

### One zone stops mid-cook and the others are fine.

That is usually heat rather than the coil. The power board under that position has to shed heat through a fan and a cabinet, and in a sealed island there is often nowhere for that air to come from. Check whether the cabinet has the ventilation the installation instructions asked for, whether anything is stored tight underneath, and whether the same zone does it with a different pan. If all three are clear, that zone's board or sensor is the repair.

### It works with some pans and not others.

Then it is working correctly. Induction needs a pan a magnet holds firmly and a base that sits flat — a warped base, a thin disc bottom or an aluminum pan will all produce a zone that will not start or will not hold. Test with a magnet on the base of the pan before assuming anything about the appliance.

### Is induction more expensive to repair than gas?

The parts are, and the diagnosis is often cheaper. A good share of induction calls are the installation or the cookware and cost the visit. What sets the top of this band is a power board, and there is one per zone rather than one per appliance, so a single failed position is not the whole cooktop.

### The cooktop shuts everything down after a while.

That is a protection working, and it is telling you about temperature. All of it, rather than one zone, points at the cooling side — the fan, its path, or the cabinet — rather than at any one position. It is also the version of this problem most likely to end without a part.
