# JennAir the appliance will not turn on

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Walk the breaker panel, including anything that looks half-tripped — a breaker that has partly gone often does not look it. Reset any GFCI outlets, which matter for undercounter appliances and anything near water. Then check for a switch: many built-in appliances are fed through one under a sink or inside a neighboring cabinet, put there by an electrician and forgotten by everybody.

### Three of the first four things are not the appliance

A breaker, a GFCI, a switch nobody remembers, and only then the machine. On a built-in kitchen that order matters more than usual, because the appliance is wired rather than plugged and there is no cord to check — which removes the obvious test and leaves people assuming the worst. Walking the panel takes two minutes.

### The integrated exception

A fully integrated dishwasher hides its controls along the top edge of the door so the front can be a cabinet panel. It shows nothing whatever with the door closed, which means “completely dead” is frequently a perfectly healthy appliance seen from the wrong angle. Open it first.

A breaker or a GFCI

The first thing, always, and free. A half-tripped breaker looks fine.

A switch nobody remembers

Under a sink, inside an adjacent cabinet, behind a plinth. Very common on built-in installations.

A control that has locked up

After an outage. A minute at the breaker clears many of them.

The door interlock or latch

On a dishwasher or microwave, an appliance refusing to acknowledge anything until the door is satisfied.

The supply or the board

Reached last, by measuring, and it is a real answer when the free ones are exhausted.

The breaker panel, properly

Switch suspect breakers fully off and back on rather than nudging them. Half-tripped is the one people miss.

GFCI outlets nearby

Including ones in a different room on the same circuit. Press reset.

Look for a hidden switch

Under the sink, in the cabinet beside, behind a plinth panel. It is more common than it sounds.

On integrated appliances, open the door

A fully integrated dishwasher shows nothing at all with the door shut. Half of "completely dead" is not.

Then book it

Say what you have already checked. It saves us repeating your afternoon.

### Everything else in the kitchen works.

Large appliances are usually on their own circuit, so the rest of the kitchen working tells you very little. Check the specific breaker for that appliance, and look for a switch feeding it — built-in installations often have one somewhere unhelpful.

### More than one appliance is dead.

Then it is more likely the supply than the appliances, and it is worth an electrician's opinion alongside ours. Several machines going at once after the same event sometimes points at what is feeding them.

### My dishwasher shows nothing at all.

Open the door before concluding anything. On a fully integrated machine the controls are along the top edge and are invisible with the door closed, so a dark front is not evidence of anything.

### Is it worth trying the breaker if the power never went off?

Yes. A control can lock up without an outage, and a full minute at the breaker is free, reversible and the first thing anybody would do. It also rules something out definitively rather than leaving it as a maybe.
