# JennAir a cooktop zone has stopped

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Try the same pan on another zone and a different pan on the same zone. Then look carefully at the glass over the zone that has stopped — a crack or a chip at an edge changes everything and means the appliance goes off at the breaker until it is dealt with.

### Three parts, three symptoms

A radiant zone is an element under ceramic glass, switched by an infinite control. Dead usually means the switch or the element. Stuck on full almost always means the switch. Unable to hold a setting points at the control rather than at either. Those distinctions matter because the parts are meaningfully different in price, and telling us which of the three you have is free.

### The one rule about the glass

A cracked ceramic surface goes off at the breaker and stays off until it is replaced. Not because the appliance will refuse — it may not — but because the glass is what stands between a spill and the wiring underneath. There is no version of this where using one more zone for one more week is a reasonable risk. It is also model-specific, so availability is confirmed before anything is booked.

The infinite switch

What meters the heat. Fails to a zone that is dead or stuck on full, and it is cheaper than the element it imitates.

Failed open, or failing under load — the second reads perfectly fine cold, which is why it is measured hot.

A zone that cuts out and comes back is often protection working rather than a part failing.

When a zone will not hold a setting rather than being simply on or off.

A crack ends the conversation until it is replaced. It is structural and it is what keeps liquid off the wiring.

Is it one zone or several?

Several points at the control or the supply. One points at that zone.

Look at the glass over it

Under good light, from an angle. A hairline crack is easy to miss and it is the one answer that changes what you do next.

Try a different pan

A badly warped base makes poor contact and produces a zone that seems weak. Free to rule out.

Note whether it is dead or stuck

Dead and stuck-on-full are opposite failures of the same switch, and telling us which shortens the visit.

If the glass is cracked, off at the breaker

And leave it off. That is not caution, it is the rule.

Usually the infinite switch, which is what meters the heat, rather than the element. It is the cheaper of the two and it is measured first for exactly that reason.

### It works but seems weaker than it used to.

Check the pan first — a base that has warped makes poor contact with the glass and transfers heat badly, which reads exactly like a weak zone. If a flat pan behaves the same, the element is worth measuring under load.

### The zone cycles on and off while I cook.

That is normal on a radiant surface: the element does not run continuously below full power, it switches on and off to average the heat. What is not normal is cycling that has obviously changed, or a zone that cuts out for long periods and comes back.

### Is a scratch a problem?

No. Scratches are cosmetic, usually from a pan dragged rather than lifted or grit underneath one. What matters is a crack, which goes through, and a chip at an edge, which becomes a crack.
