# JennAir the cooktop glass is cracked

### Do this first

Switch the cooktop off at the breaker and leave it off. Not the control panel — the breaker. The glass on a radiant or induction cooktop is a structural part of the appliance and it is what keeps liquid off the wiring underneath. A cracked surface with power on it is a risk that is not worth one more meal, and the appliance will often let you carry on using it, which is exactly the trap.

### Why this page has an instruction instead of a checklist

Every other symptom on this site is worth a few minutes of your own investigation. This one is not. A cracked ceramic or induction surface is a route for liquid to reach live components, and the appliance will usually go on working as though nothing has happened. That combination — real risk, no visible consequence — is exactly why this needs saying plainly rather than being buried in a list.

### What decides whether it is repaired

Availability. The surface is specific to the model, and on cooktops more than a few years old the answer is sometimes that the part no longer exists. We check before you book, and if it is not there we say so instead of taking a diagnostic fee for news we could have given you on the phone.

Something dropped, or a heavy pan set down hard. The commonest cause by a distance.

Thermal shock

Cold liquid onto a hot zone, or a wet pan on a hot surface. Less common, and it produces a crack that appears with no impact at all.

A chip that grew

An edge or corner chip is a crack waiting to happen, and it is worth dealing with while it is still cosmetic.

Sugar spills left on the glass

Melted sugar bonds to ceramic and pulls at it as it cools. It is the one spill worth cleaning while the surface is still warm.

Something under the cooktop pressing on it

Rare, and worth ruling out on a cooktop that cracked with nothing having happened to it.

Before anything else, and before anybody reads the rest of this page.

Photograph it

Under good light, from an angle, with something for scale. It genuinely helps us confirm the part before we come.

Get the model number

From underneath, which usually means a phone camera held up into the cabinet. The surface is model-specific and availability decides what happens next.

Do not clean it

No liquid on a cracked surface. That is the whole reason the breaker is off.

We confirm the part exists for your model before you book, because on an older cooktop that sometimes decides against the repair.

Off at the breaker, and leave it off

What it usually means

A crack running across the surface

A chip at an edge or a corner

A spidered patch where something was dropped

### It still works. Can I use the other zones?

No. The glass is not a cover over the working parts — it is a structural part of the appliance and it is what keeps spills off the wiring. The appliance will often carry on working, and that is the trap rather than reassurance. Off at the breaker until it is replaced.

### Can the glass be replaced or is it a new cooktop?

It can be replaced, and whether it is worth it comes down to availability and to the machine. The surface is model-specific, and on an older cooktop it is sometimes the thing that ends the conversation. We confirm the part exists before you book rather than after.

### It cracked on its own with nothing dropped on it.

That happens, and thermal shock is the usual explanation — cold liquid on a hot zone, or a wet pan set down. Occasionally it is something under the cooktop pressing up on the glass, which is an installation question. Both are worth mentioning.

### Will homeowner insurance cover it?

Sometimes, for accidental damage, and it is worth asking before you pay. We can give you a written scope and figure for a claim — that is a normal request and not an awkward one.
