Film that does not lift is etching, which is permanent and comes from soft water and too much detergent — the opposite problem, and one worth knowing about before you buy more detergent. ### Should I pre-rinse everything? Scrape, do not rinse. These machines have a sensor that decides how hard to work based on how dirty the water is, and a load of pre-rinsed dishes tells it the job is nearly done. Scraping the solids off and leaving the rest is what they are designed for. ### It got worse suddenly rather than gradually. Then look for something that changed: a new detergent, a filter put back wrong after a clean, a tall item stopping an arm, or work on the plumbing that changed the water pressure.
