It gets closed during plumbing work and nudged by things stored under there more often than anybody would guess. Then run the hot tap at the sink for a moment: if the house has no hot water, the dishwasher has none either. ### Half of this is under the sink Water reaches the machine through a shut-off valve on the hot line, a braided hose, and then the appliance’s own inlet valve and its screen. The first two are not the dishwasher and both are reachable with a torch and two minutes. A supply valve that was closed during plumbing work and never reopened is the single most annoying version of this problem, and it is free. ### Filling slowly is worse than not filling A machine that fills too slowly does not necessarily report anything. It runs a long cycle with too little water and washes badly, and the complaint that arrives is “it is not cleaning” rather than “it is not filling”. If your cycles have got longer and your dishes worse at the same time, that is the shape of it, and it is worth saying on the phone. The supply valve under the sink Closed, or part closed. Free to check and a genuinely common answer, especially after any work under there. The inlet valve on the appliance What lets the water in. It fails closed, and its inlet screen blocks with debris from the line. The float or level sensing A machine that thinks it already has water in it will not add any. An obstructed float assembly under the tub floor is the usual reason. Low pressure in the line A machine that fills too slowly times out. It looks like a broken valve and is a plumbing question. The control never asking Rarest, and reached by measuring the valve rather than by guessing at it. The valve under the sink Fully open, and the line not kinked behind anything stored there. Run the hot tap It should get hot within a reasonable time. If it does not, the dishwasher is not the problem. Listen at the start of a cycle There should be an audible fill within the first minute or two. Silence and a running motor is a different diagnosis from a slow trickle. Note any code and leave it A machine that reports rather than simply failing has told you which subsystem it blames. Write it down before you cancel. Then book it Model number, whether you hear anything at all, and whether other hot taps in the house are behaving. That is usually level sensing rather than supply. The machine has decided it has enough — or that it has too much — and stopped. An obstructed float is the common cause, and it is a small repair. ### Should a dishwasher be on the hot supply? On this line, yes, and it matters more than people think. A machine fed cold has to heat every fill itself, which makes cycles far longer and washing noticeably worse without anything being broken. If yours was reconnected during other work, that is worth checking. ### It fills fine when I run it right after using the sink. Then it is pressure or temperature at the appliance rather than the valve, and that is a plumbing question rather than an appliance one.
