# JennAir freezer is not freezing

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Measure it properly: a thermometer between two packages in the middle of the cabinet, left for four hours, rather than a reading from the panel. Zero Fahrenheit is the working number, and a few degrees either way is not an emergency. What matters more than the number is whether it is steady.

### Steady matters more than the number

A freezer sitting steadily at five degrees is a cabinet that needs attention and is not an emergency. A freezer averaging zero while swinging fifteen degrees across a day is a cabinet with a defrost or a sensing problem, and it is doing more damage to what is in it than the first one. That is why the measurement is over hours rather than a glance, and why “it says zero” is not the same as “it is zero”.

### Columns make this easier

The three standalone freezers on this make are panel-ready columns meant to stand beside a refrigerator column. Two complete appliances sharing a wall is the easiest refrigeration diagnosis there is: whatever the warm one is doing, the cold one has already ruled out the supply, the room, the ambient temperature and the installation. It also means the contents have somewhere to go for the day.

Ice on the evaporator

A defrost circuit that has stopped clearing the coil. The cabinet cannot pass air over a block of ice however hard it runs.

The evaporator fan

Cold made and not moved. Often audible before it is measurable.

A door not sealing

On a paneled column, as likely to be the panel hardware as the gasket, and both are inexpensive.

A condenser working against this climate

Packed with dust, or a grille closed up by cabinetry, and the cabinet simply cannot shed its heat.

The sealed system

Last, and reached by excluding the four above on record.

A real temperature, over hours

Between packages, four hours, then read it. A single spot reading after a door opening means nothing.

Is the cabinet next door fine?

On two columns that answer eliminates the house, the room and the installation in one step.

Look for frost on the back wall

A sheet rather than a haze means the defrost circuit, and that is the commonest real repair here.

Clean the condenser and clear the grille

Free, and in a Miami kitchen it is regularly the whole answer.

Then book it

Model number, the measured temperature, and whether the cabinet beside it is behaving.

Or not freezing hard enough

What it usually means

Ice cream soft when everything looks frozen

The column warm and the one beside it fine

The temperature swinging through the day

### What temperature should it hold?

Zero Fahrenheit is the working number for a home freezer and a few degrees either way is not an emergency. What matters more is steadiness: a cabinet swinging between well below zero and above ten across a day is telling you about its defrost cycle or its sensing even while the average looks correct.

### Ice cream is soft but everything else is frozen.

That is the classic early symptom, because ice cream softens several degrees before anything else shows it. It usually means the cabinet is running a few degrees warm rather than failing, which is exactly the point at which this is cheap to fix.

### My freezer is the bottom drawer of a French-door cabinet.

Then it is one appliance with the refrigerator above it, and the sealed system, the defrost circuit and the board are shared. The diagnosis is the same but the reasoning is different, because a warm freezer there has implications for the whole cabinet.
