Then switch off at the breaker for a full minute. Between them those two account for most of this complaint, and neither costs anything. ### Refusing to run is usually correct A microwave has several switches whose only job is to confirm the door is closed, and it will not run unless all of them agree. When one fails, the appliance stops — which is exactly what it should do, and which from the kitchen is indistinguishable from a breakdown. That is why this symptom so often turns out to be a small mechanical repair rather than an electronic one. ### Drawers add a mechanism On the drawer units this maker builds, the door does not swing — it drives, on rails, with a motor and position switches. That is a whole category of failures no other appliance in the kitchen has, and it means “will not start” and “will not open” are frequently the same problem. It also means an adjustment sometimes fixes what looks like a failure. A door interlock The switches that confirm the door is properly closed. The appliance refuses to run without them, by design. The drawer mechanism On a drawer unit, the drive, the rails and the position switches. Mechanical rather than microwave. A control lock or a child lock On, usually by accident. A press-and-hold undoes it and it looks exactly like a dead appliance. A control that has locked up After an outage. A minute at the breaker. It is the commonest answer and it is faintly embarrassing. Look for a lock symbol A padlock on the display, and a pad with a lock printed on or above it. Microwaves treat their interlocks as safety devices and will not run without all of them satisfied. A door that looks perfectly shut can be a fraction out, and on a drawer unit a drawer that stops just short does the same thing. ### My microwave drawer will not open. Two free things first: check nothing on the counter or in the cabinet is fouling the front, and cut the power at the breaker for a minute to let the control reset. If it still will not run its drawer, that is the drive or the position switches, and both are ordinary repairs. ### Can the interlock just be bypassed? No, and we will not do it. Those switches are what stop a microwave running with the door open. When one fails it gets replaced. There is a version of this repair where somebody makes the complaint go away by defeating the switch, and it is not one we offer. ### It is completely dark. Check the breaker first, and on an over-the-range or built-in unit check whether it shares a circuit with something else that has also stopped.
