# JennAir refrigerator is not cooling

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the middle of the fresh-food side and leave it four hours, and put another in the freezer. Then pull the toe-kick grille or look at the back and see whether the condenser is packed with dust. Those two things — a real number and a clean condenser — settle a surprising share of this before anybody arrives.

### The first question does most of the work

Is the freezer still cold? On a combination cabinet, yes means airflow and no means the system. Airflow is a damper, a fan or ice on the evaporator — all ordinary repairs. The system is the largest figure on this site and is reached last, after everything above it has been measured and excluded on record. On a pair of columns the question changes shape but not meaning: the cold one beside the warm one has already eliminated half the possibilities.

### Two free things worth doing before you call

A real temperature, taken in a glass of water rather than in air, because air temperature swings every time the door opens and tells you nothing. And a condenser cleaned — behind the toe-kick grille on most of these cabinets, and in a Miami kitchen a genuinely common cause of a machine that works too hard for years and then does not.

### What the warranty covers, before you pay anybody

This maker warrants refrigeration for two years parts and labor, then years three to five on the cavity liner and sealed system with labor included, then years six to ten on the sealed system with parts only. If your cabinet is inside any of those, its own service line is [(305) 745-7213](tel:+13057457213). We are independent and we would rather tell you than take the booking.

The defrost circuit

A coil under ice cannot pass air over itself. The commonest real repair in refrigeration and the one that looks like everything else.

The evaporator fan

What actually moves the cold. On a combination cabinet a dead fan makes the fresh-food side warm while the freezer stays perfect.

A condenser nobody has cleaned

In this climate that is maintenance with a service call attached, and it is the cause behind most "it runs constantly" complaints.

A door that is not sealing

The cheapest cause of the most alarming symptom, and it imitates a sealed-system problem exactly.

The sealed system

Last on the list and reached by eliminating everything above it on record, not by assumption.

Measure, do not read the display

A thermometer in a glass of water in the middle of the cabinet for four hours. The number on the front is the thing being tested.

Is the freezer still cold?

On a combination cabinet this is the whole diagnosis in one word. Cold freezer with a warm refrigerator is airflow, not refrigerant.

Clean the condenser

Behind the toe-kick grille or at the back. Dust, pet hair and lint. It is free and in this city it is frequently the answer.

The banknote test on the seal

Close a note in the door at several points. Somewhere it pulls out with no resistance is where the cold is going.

Then book, and say which half

The model number, which part of the cabinet is wrong, and whether it is built in or a column. That decides the parts we bring.

And which half matters

What it usually means

The fresh-food side warm, the freezer still frozen

The whole cabinet drifting a few degrees

Running constantly and never getting there

### The fridge is warm and the freezer is cold.

One of the most useful sentences you can give us. In a combination cabinet the freezer does the cooling and air is moved into the fresh-food side, so cold freezer plus warm refrigerator means the air is not arriving — a damper, an evaporator fan, or defrost ice on the coil. It is very rarely refrigerant, which is the answer people brace for.

### One of my two columns is warm.

Then the diagnosis is simpler again. Two columns are two complete appliances that share a wall, so a warm one beside a cold one rules out the house supply, the room and the installation, and points straight at that cabinet. It also means the food can move next door while the work happens.

### It is running constantly. Is that the compressor going?

Almost never, and that is the good news. A cabinet that runs and runs is usually one that cannot shed its heat — a packed condenser, a blocked grille, a door letting warm air in — or one whose defrost cycle has stopped clearing the coil. Every one of those is a fraction of what people fear.

### The display says PO.

That is a power outage notice rather than a failure: the cabinet is telling you it lost power long enough to get warm inside, and it wants acknowledging before it goes back to a normal display. Worth reading as a food-safety message rather than dismissing, and worth knowing that we see it in bursts after storms.
