# JennAir condensation inside or around the door

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Establish where the water is. Outside the cabinet in August is usually the room — warm humid air meeting cold surfaces, which is physics rather than a defect. Inside the cabinet, run the banknote test on the seal all the way round: a note that pulls out with no resistance anywhere is where the warm air is getting in.

### Some of this is the weather

Warm humid air meeting a cold surface leaves its water behind. That is not a defect, it is what air does, and in this city between June and October it does it enthusiastically. Moisture on the outside of a cold cabinet or a glass door in August is usually the room. The question worth asking is whether it is happening inside, where the air should not be getting in at all.

### What the maker’s own warranty says about this climate

Worth quoting, because it is first-party rather than our opinion. The current warranty document excludes “discoloration, rust or oxidation of surfaces resulting from caustic or corrosive environments (e.g., high salt concentrations, high moisture or humidity or exposure to chemicals)”. It does not void anything and it is not a threat. It is the manufacturer saying, on its own paper, that a coastal kitchen is a harder place to keep an appliance than an inland one — which is a reason to keep surfaces dry rather than a reason to worry.

### The cheapest repair on this appliance

A door seal. It costs the least of anything in refrigeration and it produces the most alarming set of symptoms — condensation, frost in the wrong places, a cabinet that will not hold temperature and a compressor that never stops. The banknote test takes two minutes and tells you whether to call.

Humidity, and the door being opened

Every opening in August brings in air carrying a great deal of water. On a busy cabinet that alone produces visible moisture.

A seal that is no longer flat

The commonest real cause, and the cheapest repair on the refrigeration list.

A door that does not close square

On a paneled cabinet that is often the panel hardware rather than the appliance, which is smaller again.

A blocked defrost drain

Water standing in the bottom of the fresh-food side is this rather than condensation, and it is a real repair.

A door heater not working

On cabinets with one, along a mullion or a glass door, its job is exactly this. When it stops, the moisture arrives.

Inside or outside?

Outside, in summer, is usually the room. Inside is usually the seal. It is the first thing to establish and it costs nothing.

The banknote test, all the way round

Several points on every door, including the hinge side and the corners. Where it pulls free is where the seal has gone.

Look for standing water in the bottom

That is a drain rather than condensation, and it is a different repair — a small one, and worth doing before it reaches the cabinet base.

Check nothing is holding a door open

A tall bottle, a drawer not pushed home, a shelf out of position. Common and free.

Then book if it is inside and persistent

Say whether the door carries a cabinet panel — it changes what we look at first.

### My glass wine cellar door fogs on the outside.

That is the room, not the cabinet — warm humid air meeting cold glass, which in a South Florida summer is exactly what should happen. What is worth checking is whether the model has a door heater and whether it is working, and whether the door is sitting square. Fogging on the inside is a different matter.

### There is damp down the strip between the two doors.

On many French-door cabinets that is documented as normal in humid conditions: the mullion is where two cold doors meet warm air. Persistent water rather than occasional damp is worth looking at, and so is a mullion heater that has stopped.

### There is water in the bottom of the fresh-food side.

That is not condensation — it is the defrost drain, iced closed, sending its meltwater into the cabinet instead of down the tube. Small repair, and worth doing before it finds the cabinet base.

### It never did this before this summer.

Very common and often genuine. A seal sitting a fraction proud, or a drain partly closed, copes perfectly in February and stops coping in August, because the air coming in carries several times as much water. Nothing has broken; something has been marginal for a while and the season found it.
