Symptom
JennAir dishwasher is not cleaning
The complaint that most often ends without a part. Which rack is failing, and whether the film wipes off, are the two answers that decide almost everything — and both of them are free to establish.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A loaded filter
The single commonest cause, and the one nobody has been told about. In this water it wants rinsing every month or two.
Dishwasher wash & filter service from $145 -
Blocked jets or an arm that will not turn
A single blocked hole in the third rack for cutlery is completely invisible and produces exactly this.
Dishwasher wash & filter service from $145 -
Hard water, not the machine
Film on glassware that wipes off is water hardness. The answers are rinse aid, a tablet rather than a gel, and a cleaner run periodically.
Dishwasher wash & filter service from $145 -
The diverter, on a machine with three wash levels
What sends water between the racks. One rack failing while the others are fine is its signature.
Dishwasher wash & filter service from $145 -
Water arriving too slowly or too cool
A machine that fills badly runs long and washes badly before it ever reports anything.
Dishwasher drain & pump repair from $175

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Which rack, exactly
Top, bottom or the cutlery rack. Write it down before you call — it is the single most useful sentence you can give us on this appliance.
-
02
The filter, and look at what is on it
Rinse it under a tap. If what comes off surprises you, that was your answer.
-
03
Spin the arms and check the jets
Each one should turn with a finger and no hole should be blocked. A toothpick clears them; nothing metal.
-
04
The vinegar test on a glass
If the film lifts, it is hardness and the fix is settings. If it does not, it is etching — permanent, caused by soft water and too much detergent, and the fix is less detergent from now on.
-
05
Check the rinse aid
Empty is common and it does more here than people expect, for drying and for spotting both.

About JennAir dishwasher is not cleaning
The fastest diagnosis is the code
Take the filter out and look at it before anything else — a quarter turn on the cylinder under the lower rack, then the flat screen lifts out. Then spin each wash arm by hand to check it turns freely, and hold one up to the light to see whether the jets are clear. Between them those two minutes account for most of this complaint in this city.
The two free answers
Which rack, and whether the film wipes off. Those two questions separate a filter and a settings problem from a diverter and a motor, and neither one needs a technician. One rack failing while the others are fine is the diverter or that rack's arm. Every rack failing together is the filter, the fill or the pump. Film that lifts with vinegar is water; film that does not is etching and is permanent.
Why the filter matters more on a quiet machine
Every dishwasher in this line uses a removable filter rather than a grinder, which is a large part of why it runs at 38 to 39 decibels. The trade is that somebody has to rinse it. Nobody is told this at delivery, and a filter that has never been touched in three years is behind a genuinely large share of the calls about cleaning on this make.
Hard water, honestly
Groundwater from the Biscayne Aquifer is hard, and both Miami-Dade and Broward soften it at the plant before it reaches you — so it is worth looking up your own utility's number rather than trusting a figure off a search result, because the third-party numbers for this city disagree wildly. What hardness does is film glassware and scale a heater. Rinse aid, tablets and a periodic cleaner deal with almost all of it.

Before you book
Questions about JennAir dishwasher is not cleaning
Only the top rack is dirty.
That points at the diverter that sends water between levels, or at the arm and jets feeding that rack — not at the wash pump, which would take all three racks down together. It is a much smaller repair than people expect from the symptom.
Everything is covered in a white film.
Test it with vinegar. Film that lifts is hard-water deposit: raise the rinse aid, use a tablet rather than a gel, and run a dishwasher cleaner periodically. Film that does not lift is etching, which is permanent and comes from soft water and too much detergent — the opposite problem, and one worth knowing about before you buy more detergent.
Should I pre-rinse everything?
Scrape, do not rinse. These machines have a sensor that decides how hard to work based on how dirty the water is, and a load of pre-rinsed dishes tells it the job is nearly done. Scraping the solids off and leaving the rest is what they are designed for.
It got worse suddenly rather than gradually.
Then look for something that changed: a new detergent, a filter put back wrong after a clean, a tall item stopping an arm, or work on the plumbing that changed the water pressure. Sudden changes usually have a sudden cause and it is rarely a part.
