What moves it

Why two of the same job cost different amounts

These apply at the same time and in both directions. Which of them is true of your kitchen is what the on-site diagnostic settles.

  • Which half has stopped

An appliance that runs and heats nothing is the high-voltage side. One that will not run at all is usually an interlock or a control, and that is the cheaper and commoner half by a distance.

  • The drawer, on the four models that have one

The drive, the rails and the position switches — a mechanism no other appliance in the kitchen has. Priced from $185, and an adjustment is often enough.

  • Built in, and what that does to the arithmetic

The cabinetry was cut to this appliance. Replacing it means matching a cutout or paying a cabinetmaker, which makes a repair worth doing here that would be marginal on a countertop machine.

  • Which appliance it actually is

A speed oven and a microwave-combination tower have the failures of two appliances in one box, and the diagnosis has to establish which half.

What we actually do

The job behind the figure: what it involves, when a symptom points at it, and what we check first.

  • A built-in microwave in a cabinet run, its keypad and door seen square on
    from $175

    Microwave magnetron & high-voltage repair

The appliance runs, lights and turns, and nothing gets hot. That is the high-voltage side, it is never an owner repair under any circumstances, and on a built-in unit the arithmetic about repairing it is different from a countertop machine.

    • Never an owner repair — the capacitor holds a charge after unplugging
    • Interlocks and control ruled out before the expensive half
    • Built-in cutout dimensions considered before recommending replacement

About JennAir microwave repair cost

The one appliance we ask you not to open

A microwave contains a capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge for a long time after it is unplugged. That is the reason the high-voltage side is never an owner repair, and it is worth saying plainly rather than burying in a disclaimer. Confirm the symptom with a cup of water for one minute, switch it off, and call somebody.

The cheap half is the common half

Door interlocks stop the appliance running with the door open, and when one fails the machine refuses to run at all — correct behavior that looks exactly like a dead appliance. Together with control and touch panel problems, that is the larger share of this work. We do not bypass an interlock to make a complaint go away.

What this page absorbs

Microwave door and drawer work, from $185. This maker builds four drawer models where the door is a motorized drawer, so "will not open" and "will not start" are frequently the same problem — and an adjustment sometimes fixes what looks like a failure.

Questions about JennAir microwave repair cost

Is a built-in microwave worth repairing?

More often than people assume, and for a reason that has nothing to do with the microwave: the cabinetry was cut to its exact dimensions, so replacing it frequently means matching a cutout or paying a cabinetmaker. On a countertop machine the answer is usually the opposite, and we will tell you which you are in.

Why will you not price a magnetron over the phone?

Because it should not be guessed at, and because the cheaper half of this work is far more common. An appliance that runs and heats nothing has a definite diagnosis and it takes ten minutes on site to be sure of it.

My combination oven has a dead microwave half.

That is a repair on one half rather than a failing tower. The two are entirely separate cooking systems in one appliance, and a dead microwave with a perfect oven is common. Priced here rather than on the oven page.
